Can Art Ease the Flooding of Venice?
For the last five years, the artist Andreco has created a series of sculptural installations and murals throughout the cities of Europe. Paris, Bari, and Bologna all feature his work. Every piece is place-informed - showcasing the specific vulnerabilities of each location to a changing climate. In Venice, where high winds in October of 2019 put three-quarters of the city underwater, Andreco gathers information for his geometric sculptures and graph-like murals, information that he has gathered in his other profession as an environmental engineer. Andreco notes that formulae predict Venice will be underwater in 100 years. Could the consequence of his art suggest an alternate future?

The Sound of the Dolomites
In Val Gardena, a mountain valley in the borderland between Austria and Italy, both German and Italian is spoken, but also Ladin — a romance language of the Ladinish people. There is also an incredible blend of musical styles and traditions happening in Val Gardena: we meet a conductor of a local orchestra, the frontmen of a rock band, and a young singer-songwriter pair who are keeping traditions of the region alive and treading new ground.

The purpose of this Farnsworth-led project is to engage local youth in creating public art in downtown Rockland. The project has been guided by local community mural artist Alexis Iammarino who runs SaturdayStudio at the Rockland Recreation Center. She was joined by two professional Baltimore-based mural artists, “Jessie and Katey," who have been collaborating on large-scale murals and installations across the country since 2001. The mural was also completed with help of local artists and volunteers of all ages.

A Climate of Change: The Future of Aquaculture
This film focuses on a positive future for the Maine's fishing communities through aquaculture and how more and more resource harvesters are seeing farmed shellfish and sea vegetables as a vital way to stay on the water.
This is fourth installment in a series of Island Institute-produced videos about climate change effects on our nation's fisheries. To watch the entire series, please visit the Island Institute's website.
