CAN ART EASE THE FLOODING OF VENICE?

Can public art save Venice, and its priceless cultural heritage, from the floods of a rising sea? For the last five years, the artist Andreco has created a series of sculptural installations and murals throughout the cities of Europe. Paris, Bari, and Bologna all feature his work.  Every piece is place-informed - showcasing the specific vulnerabilities of each location to a changing climate. In Venice, where high winds this past October put three-quarters of the city underwater, Andreco gathers information for his geometric sculptures and graph-like murals, information that he has gathered in his other profession as an environmental engineer. How do Andreco’s two professions - and two ways of knowing - fit together? Andreco notes that formulae predict Venice will be underwater in 100 years. Could the consequence of his art suggest an alternate future?
